Chatting with guests

The Withlocals in-app chat is how you talk to guests before and after a booking. Open a conversation from your host dashboard or the Withlocals app. Messages sync across both.

What you can send

From the chat you can send text messages, and the buttons next to the message box let you add a Photo or record a Voice message. Under More you can:

  • Share profile: send a link to your host profile.

  • Link to experience: send a link to one of your experiences.

  • Share location: send a location pin.

  • Create new offer: start a personalized offer for this guest.

Long-press or hover a message to Reply to it, React with an emoji, Pin it to the top of the conversation, or Star it. Messages you sent can also be edited or deleted.

For conversations, you can mute notifications for a while, pin the conversation to the top of your list, archive it, or mark it as read or unread.

The booking bar

When a conversation is linked to a booking, a bar at the top of the chat shows the booking's current state, for example a request awaiting your reply with the time left to respond, a confirmed booking with its date, or a completed one. Tap Details to open the booking.

Quick replies and drafts

On a new booking request, the chat offers ready-made replies and can generate a draft message for you to accept or reject the request. You can edit the draft before sending.

Message status

A message shows Sending until it reaches our servers, and Not delivered if that fails. Once the guest has opened it, the message is marked as read. You can also see when the other person is typing.

Partner bookings are different

If the guest came through a partner platform like Viator or GetYourGuide, the chat is locked. A banner appears in place of the message box: "This is a partner account. Guests book through the partner platform and don't see messages here. Contact the guest directly using their booking details."

Good to know

  • Replying to the first message of a new chat within 24 hours earns Timely Response points. See Response time and timely response score.

  • You can report a conversation for hate speech, inappropriate behavior, spam, or scam and fraud from the conversation's details.

  • Your conversation history stays available after the experience ends.
