Eligibility check

Updated over 2 weeks ago

The eligibility check is the first step of your host application. It confirms that you meet the basic requirements to host in your city and then creates your Withlocals account.

What the check asks

The check runs through these questions, in this order:

  1. Residency: how long you have lived in the city

  2. Past reviews: whether you have existing guest reviews from previous hosting

  3. Hosting hours: how many hours per week you can commit to hosting

  4. Gender identity: optional, you can select "prefer not to disclose"

  5. Languages: the languages you can host tours in

  6. Date of birth

  7. Your full name

  8. Terms and conditions: read and accept the hosts terms and the privacy policy

  9. Account: log in to your existing Withlocals account or sign up

Minimum requirements

You cannot continue if an answer is below these minimums:

  • Age: you must be at least 18 years old.

  • Residency: you must have lived in the city for at least 2 years. "Native local", "long-term local" and "fresh local" (2 to 5 years) all pass. "Newby" (less than 2 years) does not.

  • Past reviews: you must have reviews from previous guests. These can come from platforms like GetYourGuide, TripAdvisor, Google or your own website. Hosts with no prior reviews are not accepted.

  • Hosting hours: you must commit to at least 8 hours per week. Full-time (32+ hours) and part-time (12 to 32 hours) both pass. Occasional (less than 8 hours) does not.

  • Languages: English is required. You can add other languages on top.

If you do not meet a requirement, Withlocals tells you why and you cannot continue.

Which cities accept new hosts

Withlocals does not accept host applications in every city. The eligibility check only runs in cities where Withlocals is actively looking for new hosts. If your city is not accepting applications yet, the Become a Host page shows a Notify me later option instead. Leave your email there and Withlocals contacts you when applications for your city become available.

After the check

When you complete every step, submit and confirm, you see a confirmation page and your Withlocals account is created with the host role. From there, onboarding continues.

Good to know

  • Your first name appears on your public host profile. Your last name stays private.

  • Date of birth cannot be changed after your account is created, so enter it carefully.

  • If you are already logged in as a host, the application redirects you to the host home page instead.
